American Apparel and Footwear Association has just released the 2012 annual report to conclude a summary of apparel industry market trends in U.S. in 2011. The report discusses the consumption, production, employment situation, import and retail price of U.S. apparel business and trade-related issues.
The report also shows that consumers in the U.S. have made a total consumption of 19.4 billion pieces of clothing in 2011, and the total consumption has fell by 5.3% compared with that in 2010. However, the total value of the clothing retail has increased 4.9% to $ 283.7 billion. The report also showed that 97.7% of clothes sold in the U.S. are produced in other countries.
This proportion has declined by 0.3% in 2010, which is the first decline of U.S. clothing imports for the first time ever. Chairman and CEO of American Apparel and Footwear Association, Kevin Burke, said that China still is the largest supply of the U.S. apparel market accounting for 33.2% of garments sold in the U.S. market in 2011.
The report shows that in 2011, Americans spent an average of $ 910 to buy more than 62 pieces of clothes. On average, Americans continue to spend a small portion of household income to buy clothes.
