As PC replacement driven by Windows 8 has been short of original expectation and is estimated not to become significant in the first quarter of 2013, global PC-use ODD (optical disc drive) shipments in the first quarter of 2013 are expected to decrease on quarter by 5-10%, according to Taiwan-based ODD makers.
US-, Taiwan- and China-based PC vendors are conservative about first-quarter 2013 and have lowered shipment goals, while Japan-based vendors expect their first-quarter shipments to remain flat sequentially, the makers said.
As Windows 7 PCs are running out of stock and Intel will launch the Haswell platform in second-quarter 2013, demand for PC-use ODDS is likely to rebound in the second half of 2013, the makers indicated.
